Parliament or The Meaning of Recessed Paper Filters
Back in the 1940s, when it advertised the recessed paper filter for the first time, Parliament was still a young brand. However, the idea of a recessed filter was brilliant. As a tagline stated, "only flavor touches your lips".
Today, the idea is just as valid as it was back then. Here's why: when you use a regular filter or, even worse, no filter, your lips and possibly tongue come in direct contact with the cigarette. Due to the natural composition of your breath, this part of the cigarette is likely to be quite moist. When you touch it, some of this moisture passes in your mouth. In time, you stop perceiving this, but with every new cigarette, you add to the quantity of nicotine and tar that enters your body. Parliament Cigarettes on the other hand, remove this effect, because their recessed filter doesn't allow you to touch the interior of the filter. It's simple, it's useful, and it has great consequences in the long run.
Also, the recessed filters reduce the amount of additional substances generally associated to smoking because you don't inhale the smoke right near the filter. This is important if you take into account the innumerable possibly harmful substances you inhale during smoking.
Recessed filters in Parliament cigarettes proved quite popular over time. Even today, this rather simple filter is associated to high class products. In Russia, for example, Parliament is one of the favorite brands of rich people, partly due to its clean design and partly to the recessed filter.
Apart from the functional characteristics of this special type of filter, the overall design of an opened pack of Parliament cigarettes is undistinguishable. Soon after producing them for the first time, the manufacturer started to advertise opened packs to induce the (otherwise correct) idea that these filters are special and that smoking Parliament is a unique experience in itself. |
